box of treasures
Somewhat misleadingly called "box set". "Box of treasures" is more apt. Not to repeat what other reviewers have said, a couple of highlights only. The set contains, on two CDs, the full set of sonatas for violin and harpsichord, with the legendary warm, subtle and elegant Wolfgang Schneiderhan on violin and Richter himself on harpsichord. Normally, I do not like listening to harpsichord records, but Richter's playing overcomes all doubts - and the quality of recordings is very good. Only these two records are worth the price of admission, and there are others. I immensely enjoyed sonatas for flute and obbligato, with superb Aurele Nicolet on flute. You cannot seriously pretend to love Bach and not to have this set.

Reference works of Bach by Karl Richter, at the podium, manual or keyboard, he was the master.

I've spent many a decade collecting and listening to music, with Bach and early and perpetual favorite. Back in the early days, Bach and Karl Richter were two names that went together quite naturally, with almost everything Richter did and automatic buy for me. Over the intervening decades, newer interpretations breathed different (not necessarily better) life into Bach's works, but Richter was always the touch-stone against which all Bach interpretations were judged, at least for me. Whether we're talking about his organ performances or the work he did with the baton, Richter was, for all intents and purposes, Bach's reference point. And for good reason, although some say Richter over-romanticized.
This collection of 18 CDs covers Richter's discography of Bach. For the most part, the CDs are good quality, although some of the older recordings do seem a bit weak and washed out (perhaps from the equalization?). Recorded by Archiv, one of DG's labels, the recordings are generally solid, with nice soundstaging and bass extension (except for a few occasions).
The organ pieces are lovely, although perhaps not definitive in today's saturated market. Still, considering when they were recorded, these were the references of the time. Richter excels on the organ and harpsichord, his primary instrument, and his technique shows through even on pieces like the stalwart Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565. The orchestral recordings actually fare better, as some of these recordings, such as the orchestral suites, easily rival any of today's recordings. The Mass in B Minor is still a reference of this work for me, today.
Considering the cost of this box, for 18 CDs, it's a no brainer that anyone interested in Bach's music, or in Richter himself, should have this in their collection. I was disappointed it the presentation and documentation, but it's the music that matters.

Stunningly beautiful, sparkling and unpretentious renditions of Bach's many masterpieces, anchored by Richter's mastery of harpsichord, organ, and conducting, from the days before "period instruments" came in vogue. That is NOT to imply, however that Richter was not "historically informed." Indeed, he was lauded internationally for his educated allegiance to the "Leipzig tradition" (with true appreciation of its choral tradition as well, which is of course integral to playing and understanding Bach's work.) Gunther Ramin, (under whom Richter studied in Leipzig, and later followed as organist at Leipzig's St.Thomas Church,) said, “In Johann Sebastian Bach I see the ultimate personification of everything which lends meaning, purpose, vigour and gladness to human life. He is for me the supreme symbol of vital and ceaseless energy.” --(Günther Ramin) Surely this sentiment is powerfully evident in his pupil's work.
Here, Richter plays the Silbermann organ in Freiburg and the Organ of the Jaegersborg Church in Copenhagen...These interpretations of Bach's work reflect more than ample affinity with the original music as written, without 'romantic' infusion. The sound quality is great, and a well-chosen cross section of Bach's work is included, encompassing many of the great harpsichord based concerti (including the Brandenburgs), several for organ, several Suites, Toccatas, etc... The price is right, and any Bach collector would likely consider this a welcome addition, or even a favorite. I was pleased to note that Fischer-Dieskau appears on the Mass and Credo on the last disk. Also, flute features prominently in this collection, played by the great Swiss, Aurèle Nicolet.

Richter a universal musician
