著者について

Narisa Togo has loved birds all her life. She was born in 1987 in Japan and received her bachelor's degree in Ecology at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. She then did her Masters in Children's Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art. She has been a keen birdwatcher from the age of 13 and still takes groups bird watching. She lives in Japan.

This is a lovely, non-fiction picture book with large double page illustrations. It is a suitable gift for slightly older children who have grown up with picture books and like birds and nature and for adult nature lovers. A work of art as well as bookmaking.

Magnificent Illustrations!

I had to look up how Narisa Togo - the illustrator - did this! It’s called reduction linocut artwork, which I learned basically means cutting the illustration in linoleum and painting one color at a time onto the paper as the linoleum is progressively cut out. Wow. These illustrations are truly stunning. I have spent a lot of time admiring these works of art!

The text is more mixed. I liked all of the pages, but I’m a middle-aged adult who loves illustrated children’s science books... so I consulted the experts. My kids (4, 7, 9) loved the pictures and liked a lot of the facts and some of the pages. Other pages read more like an encyclopedia than a kids’ book, which is why I gave 4 instead of 5 stars.

This is an awesome book for an elementary science classroom, and a great book for kids who are particularly interested in either birds or art. It’s also beautiful enough to be a coffee table book!
