このところ60年代ポップスにはまりまくっている私です。

で、このところオリジナルもいいのだけど、素敵なカバーはまた別のお味で楽しい！って気分になっています。

その意味で、この一枚は、何と言うか、とってもいい。

原曲とはまた全然違う味付けながら（男女のデュオだし）、原曲のよさは失わずで、二倍美味しいかも。

曲の選定にも文句ナシ。

これは、一家に一台ならず、一家に一枚のすてきなモノですぞ（明るい朝によし、グラスを傾ける夜にもよし）。

斬新な曲解釈がなされているわけではありません。でも、60年代ポップスの新鮮なカヴァー集に聞こえました。

その理由は、まず、60年代的に録音されたかのようにおおらかに録音されていること。次に、選曲、アレンジは、過去を振り返りながら前に進んでいく雰囲気を醸し出していること、つまり、音楽が日々進化を遂げている時期＝60年代の前向きで右肩上がりの昂揚感を抽出しているので、ノスタルジックなカヴァー集には終わっていないこと。最後に、ブックレットを見ると、はっきりわかりますが、見た目は美女と野獣なのですが、声は美女と美男のデュエットが、オリジナルとのちがいを生んでいること。

アーティストに関して予備知識、視聴経験、期待度がないリスナーでも楽しく聴けます。

甦る名曲たち。

どれもこれも名曲ばかり。
古い曲が多いけれど、見事にアレンジして甦ってます。
モノクロ写真がカラー写真になったような感じです。
特にAlone Again OrはLoveのオリジナル(Forever Changesの1曲目)が大好きだったのですが、このアルバムのように引っ張る感じで歌うのもいいなって思いました。
※オリジナルはもっとさわやかに歯切れよく歌ってるので。
オリジナルを持ってる人は聴き比べてみると面白いと思います。

卑怯なカバー集

聴いてるコッチが恥ずかしくなるくらい、ポップソングのカバーセンス抜群のマシュー・スイート。

ツボを押さえたギタープレイが春から初夏にかけて聴くにはピッタリです。

コテコテの名曲からちょっとレアな曲までサラリと演奏してくれてます。

冒頭の「I See The Rain」はマーマレードの超名曲。

（米でも英でもない）ザ・バーズによるカバーを聴いたことがありますが、それよりもずっと良いです。

この曲のためだけに買う価値はあります。

まぁ、卑怯なくらい名曲満載なのでハズレなしってことでご安心を。

Susanna Hoffsの声は好みによるかも。

バングルズは複数のヴォーカリストがかわりばんこに歌っていて飽きなかったが，バンド解散後，スザンナ・ホフスのソロは若干苦しかった。魅力的な声なんだけど，バラエティーに欠けた。しかし，マシューと組んだのは正解だ。時に甘く，時にやさしく，実に正しいポップスを聴かせてくれる。このコンビでもう１枚どうだろうか。

私はスザンナ。あいかわらずのロリでハスキーなヴォイスがいい感じにレトロ感を出しています。マシューの声も時々トムペティぽかったりして楽しめます。でもなんといっても、アルバムのインナースリープの二人の写真でしょう。キッチュで笑えます。

Hatte mir bischen was anderes vorgestellt. Dachte man hört Susanna Hoffs öfters, nur leider Singt Matthew Sweet mit Susanna Hoffs und das klingt dann nicht so toll. Aber man kann sie anhören.

Apparently, Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs were going to bill themselves as "Sid & Susie." Glad the Shout label has their names on the release, because it made me look twice & eventually get this disc. There really aren't weak tracks on this CD. Cover versions can add to an original or well-known track, simply be a carbon copy or sometimes make you want to go back to the original disc. Two of these tracks have spent a great deal of time in my personal top ten rotation. I think my very favorite, which is a favorite because I kept playing it off the Left Banke record repeatedly back in its day and haven't heard it elsewhere, is "She May Call You Up Tonight." Ian Matthews did record a version of it, but the Left Banke's baroque pop was a unique sound. Sid & Susie give it a hard edge complete with soaring harmonies and jangling guitars, "I've been telling lines I never knew, all to keep that girl away from you." It's a luscious cover, not an obvious choice. Also a wonderful cover is "And Your Bird Can Sing" that pumps energy into what was a minor recording for the Beatles, but gleams with Sweet & Hoffs, "When your prize possessions start to wear you down, look in my direction, I'll be round." "Monday Monday" which will be one of the more familiar tracks is also given an excellent rendition with Hoffs proudly singing the "ba-da, ba-da's" like a boast for the bygone. The track has a stunning energy and is pure delight. I particularly like how the reverb flows into the break before the final chorus resumes. Fairport Convention & Judy Collins are closely identified with the Sandy Denny classic "Who Knows Where the Time Goes." Susan Cowsill recorded a cover of it on her recent "Just Believe It" set that went to the top of my favorite tracks of the year, as did the entire CD. Sid & Susie do a great version here, although I still go back to Collins' crystal Colorado voice and Susan's wonderful reading. I also enjoy their version of the Bee Gees' "Run to Me." The Bee Gees are kind of like the musical equivalent of Woody Allen -- it's hard not to sound like them, much as its hard for other actors not to sound like Woody Allen when doing his dialogue. Their rhythms and sound are so distinctive. This track is a contemplative gem that closes the disc. There are no weak tracks on this set, which makes me hope that a volume two does arrive! Enjoy!

On Under the Cover's Vol 1 Sweet team's up with Sussana Hoff's and they cover many different band's including The Beatle's , Niel Young , The Who, Fairport Convention and Bob Dylan. It's a solid collection of song's and Sweet's voice teamed up with Hoff's sound great.

Favorite's :

"I See The Rain

"And Your Bird Can Sing"

"It's all over now Baby Blue"

"Cinnamon Girl"

"The Kid's Are All Right"

They teamed up befour on Austin Power's and they do it again here. Solid and no real "Bad" song's. Again Hoff's voice is beutifull and alot better then some of the

other female crap these day's.

If you enjoyed what Matthew Sweet did on Altered Beast (and Son of Altered Beast) and have ever since found his other material a bit too 'nice', then this is the album for you. On some level it is still 'pop' music, but in a very retro and psychedelic way. The guitar work is amazing - really quite heavy in many places. The two voices are so different but work so well toger (like Campbell & Lanegan). Also the choices of songs are first class. You may not realise how many of these songs you know, and love, until you hear them here. Also the arrangements are very special - these are not simply bland copies of the originals.
The CD cover is great to look at too!
I bought this CD with some trepidation having read some of the other reviews and having found some of Sweet's recent works to be a bit bland - but I LOVE THIS RECORD.
