Purchase options and add-ons
In the early 1950s, a brooding true crime mystery unfolds in the sleepy towns and isolated sheep stations of the River Murray. The discovery of a petrified female body in raging floodwaters triggers a police investigation across three states. Her facial features and hands are missing, but evidence suggests she has been murdered. As detectives close in on a suspect, a vital witness dies a violent death and the case collapses, leaving the victim’s identity unresolved. Seven decades on, a new investigation uncovers a family secret that leaves little doubt about the victim’s identity - evidence that calls for the exhumation of The Petrified Woman from her pauper’s grave to undergo DNA analysis.

About the author

Peter Butt is an Australian investigative documentary filmmaker and author. His specialty is history and true crime. His multi-award-winning film of the extraordinary Bogle-Chandler Cold Case on 1963 provided an unexpected solution and gained the largest audience for a commissioned documentary in Australian Broadcasting Corporation history. His 2016 book on the case Dr Bogle & Mrs Chandler - The Confession tells the entire story and delivers yet another breakthrough.
Peter's 2015 book, Merchants of Menace - The True Story of the Nugan Hand Bank Scandal, reveals new evidence about the mystery death of Frank Nugan and the disappearance of his business partner, Michael Hand. He also uncovers new evidence linking the bank to drug traffickers and the CIA. While writing the final chapter of the book, Peter uncovered the new identity and whereabouts of Michael Hand - a discovery that made headline news around the world.
In 2017, Peter restored and released Jack Nasty-Face, the classic memoir of sailor William Robinson, who fought at the Battle of Trafalgar and later blew-the-whistle on the Royal Navy's harsh treatment of the common seaman.
