Mary Ellen Mark: The Book of Everything Hardcover – 6 August 2020
by
Mary Ellen Mark
(Author)
Conceived and edited by film director Martin Bell, Mary Ellen Mark’s husband and collaborator for 30 years, the Book of Everything celebrates in over 600 images and diverse texts Mark’s extraordinary life, work and vision.
From 1963 to her death in 2015, Mark told brilliant, intimate, provocative stories of characters whom she met and engaged with―often in perpetuity. There was nothing casual or unprepared about Mark’s approach; she unfailingly empathized with the people and places she photographed. For this comprehensive book Bell has selected images from Mark’s thousands of contact-sheets and chromes―from over two million frames in total. These include her own now iconic choices, those published once and since lost in time, as well as some of her as yet unpublished preferences. Bell complements these with a few selections of his own.
Along with Mark’s pictures made in compelling, often tragic circumstances, the Book of Everything includes recollections from friends, colleagues and many of those she photographed. Mark’s own thoughts reveal doubts and insecurities, her ideas about the individuals and topics she depicted, as well as the challenges of the business of photography.
I became a photographer because photography found me. Once I started to take pictures there was no choice. That was just what I was and what I wanted to do and what I wanted to be. Mary Ellen Mark

Impeccable.

These three volumes are so good in every way. The print quality, paper stock, binding curation, etc. are all worthy of the name on the book. Even the packaging is superior to what we normally see for photography books. Steidl really did this one properly. This collection should sit proudly in the libraries of all who appreciates fine photography books.

What a treasure!

Mary Ellen Mark: I have admired her, and envied her. Admired her for the courage and heart it took for her to enter into so many stories so compassionately—even ones that may have horrified her. Admired her for her perfect and unflinching eye and her ability to find beauty everywhere. Admired her for her sheer photographic skills. And envied everything that I admired about her. I have treasured her Aperture monograph for many years. Today I received "The Book of Everything," a three-volume posthumous retrospective edited by her husband Martin Bell and just published by Steidl. Because I ordered early, I got it at a fraction of the current huge asking price, which I could have never afforded. It is as huge as its price, weighing in at over 10 pounds, and it may be the most lavish photography set I have ever seen, even surpassing Salgado's "Genesis," a true labor of love. What an amazing treasure it is!
