東京乃木坂生まれ。大田区の洗足池の近くで育つ。トモエ学園から、英国系ミッションスクール香蘭女学校を経て、東洋音楽大学（現東京音大）の声楽科を卒業。絵本や童話を上手に読めるお母さんになりたくて、ＮＨＫ放送劇団の試験を受け合格。テレビの一期生となり、放送の中で育つ。「ヤン坊ニン坊トン坊」「魔法のじゅうたん」など子供むけ番組も多い。その間、劇団文学座の研究所、ニューヨークのメリー・ターサイ演劇学校などで学ぶ。商業演劇、新劇などの舞台出演も多く、また定期的にステージのワンマンショウも催す。第一回放送作家協会女優賞、日本婦人放送者懇談会大賞、テレビ大賞などを受賞。
