Whilst fundamentally a memoir, I like to think of this book as essentially a message of hope. It initially looks back at historical abuse and the impact that it has had on my own life and health. Abuse is spoken about more openly now than ever before, but it was a taboo subject when I was growing up, everything was ‘brushed under the carpet.’ It is now often on the news, especially high-profile cases, and is quite a hot topic. A lot of people are not happy accepting abuse in any form anymore, and rightly so. However, many are from a time when, like me, it wasn’t openly discussed, or borne from the fear that you wouldn’t be believed if you did speak up, the ‘children should be seen and not heard’ era. There are still lots of vulnerable women and children that suffer every day.

I look back at the life events that have shaped me, the early years of abuse and my eventual rebellion; leading onto my young adult years when my trust was eroded, to my eventual decision to completely change my life and how that brought me to where I am today. I also explore recent studies that have linked childhood abuse and trauma to later life illnesses (Adverse Childhood Experiences), and how, in particular, it could be connected to the immune system, this is the story of my journey through abuse and how I survived and came out the other side stronger and more determined to make a difference. What makes this book unique is the fact that I am just an ordinary person, and I believe the story is easily relatable for others. Also, since the abuse in this book takes several distinct forms and is inflicted by different people this would help anyone who has suffered from any of these types of abuse. My wish is that by sharing my story it could help others not to give up, not to settle and to believe in their dreams and perhaps it will even become a part of their own survival guide.

We still live in a very patriarchal society, and I am passionate about helping women and girls to claim their rightful place in the world. I feel that this subject has never been more relevant than in this current climate where gender equality is being fought for, and abusers, even from decades ago are being held accountable for their despicable actions.

Throughout the book I weave some of my friendships and make a dedication to some of the special women in my life. During my life I have been supported by the most amazing friends and I believe this gives the book balance and pays tribute to those who have always been there for me. Friendships have always been very important to me, and I think it brings the whole story together. At the end of each chapter there is also a letter, which I think is powerful.

Amidst all the mainstream pain and suffering in the world today, I believe that the little stories of everyday people that overcome adversity are a win for mankind.

I bought this book not quite knowing what to expect but trauma and abuse were spoken about in a very sensitive way. Parts made me smile and nod my head thinking Ah yes I have felt those feelings. I used to be a midwife and therefore could understand totally the profound effect losing a child can have on someone. Personally the last chapters were my favourite talking about links between childhood trauma and physical illness. As part of a PhD in neuropsychology I undertook research looking at correlations between ptsd in women and substance misuse. I think academics should read this book it gives a great insight into someone’s mind, in fact I think everyone should read this book, it makes you realise how ‘normal’ abnormal situations are. I was lucky to have wonderful parents and a happy childhood until I hit 11 and was bullied horrendously. This was my trauma and so much of the writing resonated with me. …. Excellent!!

This book was truly amazing and thought provoking.
I knew Janet as a child and had no idea of the issues she was experiencing - very similar to my own. As a society back in the day we just simply didn't talk about these things - and that bought out some strange feelings for me too.
This was such a brave thing to do - we must all talk about things - always, otherwise nothing changes.
I'm so happy to see just how well rounded and amazing Janet became, raising two wonderful daughters and encouraging them to be strong and independent women - which is just how it should be - always for all our children.
I tittered to see how she kept the Donny candle alight 💜- love it!
Thank you Janet for such a great insight into your life and also my own 💝

Having known Janet for a few years through a mutual friend I have found her to be a lovely, gentle person. I could never have imagined what traumas she has had to endure through her childhood and teenage years. It was upsetting but also interesting to read and how what has happened to her has shaped the person she has become. I’m glad she found happiness in her life when she met Steve. A must read for anyone going through, or having gone through, any kind of domestic abuse.

I’ve been graced with Janet’s friendship for well over 30 years but never knew the full course of her life events. An inspiring read which also filled me with sadness learning what Janet has endured. Her trials and tribulations have shaped Janet into following her goals and her dreams and she is an ‘extraordinary’ woman far from ‘ordinary’. I’m positive that Janet’s story will help other women open up, that we should be heard, and help is out there if we look for it via many avenues always starting with our friends who hold our hands through thick and thin and give never ending support and encouragement.

I have know Janet for over 50+ years and did not know what Janet had gone through. Janet has been very brave to publish her memoirs and should feel very proud. Reading this book proves life is what you make and don't give up on your dreams.
