Books she's written and illustrated include the much-beloved Dog Heaven and Cat Heaven.

Cynthia Rylant grew up in West Virginia. She now lives in the Pacific Northwest.

Cynthia Rylantは、Henry and Mudge，Mr. Putter and Tabby，Cobble Street Cousinsなどの子供向けシリーズ本や絵本などが有名な作家。

そのRylantが書いた挿し絵が一切無いこの本は、とても不思議な本だ。

そもそも、この本はなんなのだろう？詩集？エッセイ集？ショート・ショート？

少なくとも、文中のHeとかHimの先頭のHが必ず大文字で書かれているのは、それが神様を表しているからだろう。それは理解できる。

この本は、一編が１ページ半の短いお話で構成されている。
これは詩なのかな？
詩と言うには…ユーモアとウィットに富んで…と言うよりも、笑え過ぎる！

一編一編があまりにも笑えすぎるから、これを詩集と呼ぶことがためらわれるんだ。

そういう点では、この本はもっと注目されていいと思う。

Rylantが自身で絵を描いたDog HeaveやCat Heavenと同じ様に、この本には彼女にとって神様というものがどういうものか、如実に表れていると思う。
彼女にとって神様ってのは『人間臭くて、おちゃめでカワイイ、愛すべき存在』なんだろう。

各々の詩(？)には、GODから始まるタイトルが付いている。
GOD GOT A DOG, GOD GOT ARRESTED, GOD SAW A MOVIEと言った感じだ。

この本の中で、神様はとにかく人間のことを知りたがり、人間と同じ体験をしたがっている。

しかし、不思議なのは、クリスチャン・保守派の人達も多いアメリカで、こんな本を出版して物議をかもしたり、ひんしゅくを買ったりしなかったのかな？という点だ。

とはいえそんな疑問以前に、彼女が描くユーモラスな神様像は、数々の笑いを振りまきながらも、しかし、不遜な感じを感じさせない。
それは、彼女がカラダいっぱい・心いっぱいの神に対する敬意を持ってこの本を書いたからに違いない。

But, He/She is!! And that's the point of these radiant, glowing, fun and oh, so totally enlightening poems. I read the book in one sitting and then read it aloud to my husband. He's not a poetry person, but even he loved these poems.

God Went to the Doctor (loved this one! The line, "And God said, well you're pretty good at playing me, I figured you'd know what the problem was," had me rolling with laughter.)

Suffice it to say that this will be the best $5 bucks you spend this week if you buy this amazing little book of poems and they'll have you smiling, nodding, calling your best friend to read them to her and maybe even your mother & kids. Each and every one of her poems is great and delights to the max. Buy this book, no buy several copies so you can share them. I know I'll be buying more, for sure!

This book was referenced in a workshop I attended, so I purchased it for my 13 yr. old granddaughter but after reading it, I purchased my copy. I think this is one of the loveliest books and it's a short one, that I've ever read. It is very spiritual and real. Much food for thought. Simple but beautiful. Funny, too.

In an era of religious extremism and intolerance, this book reminds us that God is for everyone, and that we are each entitled to our own definition of who He/She is. The message that God may be among us or, more romantically, within us, puts more responsibility on us to live well and treat all beings with reverence.
I recommend this book to Theists, Atheists, Humanists, Undecideds, and especially to young people who are forming their own beliefs. It's an inspiring, witty and accessible perspective on a big subject.

Love this tender book. It makes God so HUMAN! Fun, silly yet reverent. Very light, read it knowing it’s not a book of theology 🙄 ENJOY

This is a wonderful book to give as a gift for confirmation. I wish I could find new copies of the actual book and not the electronic book. It just falls flat as an e-book. Please, Publisher, please bring this wonderful book back!
