これまでにも、L.クープラン全集などでパンチの効いた演奏で作品の魅力をとことん聞かせてくれてきたリチャード・エガー。指揮活動にも注目が集まりますが、彼のもうひとつの魅力である鍵盤楽器を演奏しての最新盤は、ヘンデルの「偉大な」8つの組曲集。この曲集は1720年に出版されており、ヘンデルが、ロンドンの人々に初めて提示するために選んだもの。リヒテルや、キース・ジャレットなど、様々なピアニストが素晴しい演奏をのこしているにも関わらず、なぜかレパートリーとしては定着していません。ヘンデルが腕によりをかけて書いたこれらの曲は、オーケストラ的な厚みのあるサウンド、イタリア風のヴィルトゥオーゾ的要素、フランスのスティル・ブリゼ(和音を分散させて書く書法)による非常に華やかな効果など、聴きどころ満載。エガーが持ち前の推進力と歌心で聴かせます。第7番のパッサカリアの迫力から、第3番のアルマンドでの繊細な表情まで、ヘンデルの作曲家としての偉大さと、ヘンデルが鍵盤楽器の類稀なる名手であったことをあらためて実感させられる内容です。

    Enfin une composition pour clavecin (bien) jouée au clavecin et non au piano.
    Toutes les harmoniques typiques de cet instrument s'y retrouvent sans artifice de pédale.

    Straordinario questo disco di Richard Egarr: si pone risolutamente trai migliori dischi di questo musicista e tra le più grandi interpretazioni di sempre di queste Suite di Handel.
    Grande libertà agogica e quindi estrema capacità di valorizzare espressivamente ogni risvolto della partitura, sia nelle sezioni in tempo lento, dove il fraseggio è quasi cantante per qualità melodica, sia nelle sezioni in tempo rapido, mai metronimicamente risolte in una sequenza rapidissima di note saltellanti. In questo modo diventa sorprendente la varietà espressiva ottenibile dal clavicembalo, una bellissima copia moderna di un Ruckers del 1638 dotata di un suono splendido: pieno al grave, molto ricco di armonici e dolcissimo in gamma acuta.
    Una interpretazione travolgente, che apre nuove prospettive su questi lavori sia rispetto alle storiche letture pianistiche come quella famosa Richter/Gavrilov che alle esecuzioni clavicembalistiche di qualche anno fa, ottime virtuosisticamente ma meno ricche interpretativamente (come la giovanile lettura di Dantone).
    Registrazione eccellente, disco da non perdere.

    This is an altogether exceptional recording. Egarr plays with a brazen energy that fully captures the music's lyricism and dramatic bite. This is clearly music composed by a master of musical drama and above all a born entertainer, in the highest sense of the idea. I can think of no other way of describing the playing other than resorting to the cliche that Egarr does not so much play Handel as 'become' Handel during the duration of these two discs.His spontaneous sounding ornamentation speaks of a deep love for these pieces and helps the music breathe. The harpsichord is a superb copy of a sonorous Ruckers instrument, perfectly recorded. I have heard virtually all of the other recordings of these suites on both harpsichord and piano. Scott Ross' version is predictably masterful. Ragna Schirmer has played them delightfully on the piano. But Egarr stands apart in capturing Handel's often quirky shifts of gear and delight in astonishing his listeners. Only Landowska in the few pieces she recorded captured a similar sense of musical generosity and grandeur.

    We enjoyed these so much we bought the set for a relative. Exciting and illuminating playing of these very varied suites. The G minor is particularly memorable. It builds to such a climax, it's about as near as Handel ever gets to rock 'n roll! Nonetheless, Richard Egarr never lets things get out of hand with his beautifully controlled playing.

    I never thought I'd sit down and listen to a double-album of harpsichord music, but this stuff is fabulously, and totally baroquely exciting. Lovely playing on a full-bodied harpsichord
