America's Secret MiG Squadrons is the story of a group of incredibly brave military pioneers who put their lives on the line to establish a training program that would prepare the US Air Force for a potential Cold War battle with Soviet aircraft. As a F-4 Phantom II pilot in Vietnam, Col. Peck had been shocked by the technological abilities of Soviet-built aircraft, and at the poor level of training available to US pilots to aid them in their battles with Soviet MiGs in the skies over Vietnam. Working with the support of Gen Hoyt S. Vandenberg, Jr., and under conditions of extreme secrecy, the CONSTANT PEG program was launched with Peck as the original Red Eagle. This is the fascinating history of the men who trained to fly and maintain covertly obtained MiGs, for the first time providing an insider's perspective, personal anecdotes, and photographs, revealing how Peck battled bureaucracy and scepticism to ultimately establish the premier fighter pilot training center - the real Top Gun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding read and wonderful history

I found this book to be a wonderful read. I am also a USAF officer familiar with the program and am grateful that Gail Peck compiled this work. It is an incredible story that played a vital part in the creation of the most powerful Air Force in the history of aerial warfare. While I have read some critiques on this work, I personally enjoyed the anectdotes that were told...this is history that we need to have access to in order to understand the magnitude of the program. It is important to annotate the incredible feats of manufacturing and ingenuity that all the Tonapah crowd accomplished. Gail is to be applauded for the effort of compiling this work--he has preserved history. Great book, great story, great Americans!!

The Photos!!!! F-14 with MiG-23! Ein unbekanntes Thema auch auf englisch leicht verständlich dargestellt. Unwahrscheinlich - was die Amis für einen Aufwand getrieben haben.

Great book about the details of Mig use at Tonopah and how they were used to teach US pilots about tactical fight against soviet plane. A lot of personal stories. Check out also Red Eagles by Steve Davies.

2.0 out of 5 stars Libro superficiale

2.0 out of 5 stars Could have been so much more more

i was hoping that this book would have been so much more. I was hoping it would explain how the MiGs got into the USA, what they were like to fly, how they fared against US aircraft.
Instead it tends to just explain who the poeple were that the author worked with. Not as interesting as it could have been.
